Summary[edit]

Description
English: As seen just after midnight on a March 2023 morning, an electronic bilboard implores commuters on Elmwood Avenue in Buffalo, New York to "tell Albany Lawmakers NO Natural Gas Bans". Such proposed bans were a contentious political issue at the time, both nationwide and even more so in New York State, where Governor Kathy Hochul's annual State of the State address included calls for a ban on the sale of gas heaters and appliances by 2030 for single-family homes and 2035 for commercial buildings, citing both the effects of the fossil fuel industry on climate change and new scientific studies connecting natural gas with respiratory problems and cancer. While hailed by progressives, the proposals were deeply unpopular in Upstate New York and especially in the Buffalo area, where a devastating blizzard several months prior had caused widespread and long-lasting power outages and led to 48 deaths, with many citing the prevalence of gas heating in the region as a primary reason why the death toll was not even higher than that.
