Title
"St. Michael" sternwheeler at the Circle City waterfront, Alaska, ca. 1899
Description
Circle City was established in 1893 when gold was discovered at nearby Birch Creek. The name came from the founders' belief that the town was on the Arctic Circle although it was in fact about 50 miles south of it. Prior to the 1897 Klondike Gold Rush, Circle City was one of the largest mining camps on the Yukon. The name was shortened to Circle on the 1910 census. The "St. Michael," which can be seen at the right of the photograph was constructed in 1898 in Seattle and first owned by the Empire Transportation Company. Circle City Waterfront. General Circle, Alaska location provided.
