Description"Rockville White Granite" (porphyritic granite, Rockville Granite, late Paleoproterozoic, 1.73 to 1.78 Ga; quarry near Rockville, Minnesota, USA) 1 (25902855894).jpg |
"Rockville White Granite" - porphyritic granite from the Precambrian of Minnesota, USA. (~23.7 cm from top to bottom) "Granite" in the decorative stone trade is any relatively hard rock that will take a fine polish, regardless of mineralogy or chemistry or geologic origin. "Granites" turn out to be felsic to mafic intrusive igneous rocks (granite, granodiorite, porphyritic granite, rapakivi granite, orbicular granite, pegmatitic granite, graphic granite, anorthosite, monzonite, gabbro, norite, gabbronorite, dolerite, diabase, charnockite, etc.) and high-grade to very high-grade metamorphic rocks (metanorthosite, gneiss, metaconglomerate, amphibolite, quartzite, granulite, migmatite). True granites (= monzogranites & syenogranites & porphyritic varieties) make up most of the commercial granite trade. Countless varieties are quarried around the world. "Rockville White Granite" comes from the Precambrian of central Minnesota. This rock is a porphyritic granite to a weakly-developed rapakivi granite. The large, light-colored crystals are microcline feldspar (= potassium feldspar). Plagioclase feldspar is also present. The dark gray material is quartz. The black-colored material is biotite mica and hornblende amphibole. Minor minerals reported from the Rockville Granite include zircon, apatite, chlorite, sericite mica, and titanite/sphene. Geologic unit: Rockville Granite, late Paleoproterozoic, 1.73 to 1.78 Ga Locality: quarry near Rockville, eastern Stearns County, central Minnesota, USA |
