Summary[edit]

Description
English: ID number: P09576.001

Photographer: unknown
Place: South Australia
Eileen Champion bid farewell to her fiancée, 47 Private (Pte) Thomas Whyte, in late 1914. In their short time apart their minds rarely strayed from one another and their future together. Indeed, Pte Whyte’s thoughts were solely of Champion on the eve of the landings at Gallipoli, when he penned a heartfelt letter to be sent in the event of his death. In the letter he urged her not to grieve, writing:
The thought that hurts worst of all is of you and your sorrow … It would soften the last thoughts if I knew you would be really happy again … Goodbye my love, may you get all the happiness you deserve, that will be my last wish.
Pte Whyte was fatally wounded while rowing members of the 10th Battalion to shore at the landing.
Champion later married but cherished Pte Whyte’s letter for the remainder of her life.
