Summary[edit]

Nagapattinam district is one of the 38 districts of Tamilnadu, state in southern India. This district is known as the port city. In the 17th century the Dutch enlarged their business by keeping Nagapattinam as its head quarters. They built St.Peter’s at the centre of Nagapattinam for their worship and assert their faith in Christ.

Now St. Peter’s church is under the dominion of C.S.I Trichy – Tanjore Diocese. The church’s antiquity is very well maintained by the Diocese and the church authorities.

The architecture of the church

 St. Peter’s church is located in the heart of Nagapattinam, near the railway station.  The length of the church is approximately 135 feet and its width is 40 feet.  The front wall of the church is in the shape of a Bell. Ringing of church bell signifies the time for worshippers to gather for a church service. Like this Bell shape of wall signifies the place for worshipper to gather for a church service and also it signifies the symbol of Joy.  The front wall of the church is engraved with the symbol of A and Ω and a symbol of two keys engraved diagonally to each other.  At the bottom of the bell tower there is an inscription in Dutch Language.

The intramural structure of the church

 The infrastructure of the church has been designed and constructed by highly talented architects.  The church is designed into three position.

 The Altar

 Choir seat

 The sovereign seat

 All the seats and pillars of the church are made of high quality teak wood.

There is a balcony above the entrance of the church. This balcony is supported by six wooden pillars and these pillars remind us of the six stone jars that Jesus used to did his first miracle at the canaanite’s wedding. A portrait of the Dutch queen, carved out of wood is hung in the balcony. It is believed that the King, Queen and other high officials sat here and participated in the church worship.

The roof structure of the church is similar to that of a boat capsize. which is reminiscent of the roof of Noah’s ark in the Old Testament. This roof is supported by 12 pillars and these 12 pillars are remind us Jesus Christ’s 12 disciples.

cross containing the Celtic structure.

To the right side there is a small altar and in that altar we can see a small

The pulpit in the church is very unique. It is designed like a sacramental vessel. The pulpit reminds the Chalice and the lid resembles the paten. From here he will share the words of God.

Choir seats are arranged in front of the altar. There is a pipe Organ near the Choir seat.

There are two wooden shields on the top of the altar, one depicting the queen and the other depicting the of the king. Altar is considered to be the heart of the church. This altar defined holy Trinity. We can see various symbols in this Altar. The word “THIS DO IN REMEMBERANCE OF ME” is set in the centre of the altar. On one side of the Altar, there is a symbol of Alpha (A) and on the other side there is a symbol of Omega (Ω). Both of these words are Greek words, the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. (A) Alpha means the beginning and (Ω) Omega means the end. These symbols are located on the altar to symbolize the scriptural word that god is the beginning and the end.
