Summary[edit]

Description
English: "Art" in the Rabley valley This piece of modern statuary faces the car park of the Rabley Contemporary Drawing Centre. This thriving little art centre, which runs a full programme of courses and exhibitions, occupies a group of converted farm buildings. They are isolated in the peaceful beauty of open fields running northwards up Rabley valley, and sheltered from the prevailing west winds by Rabley Wood (at top left of this image). This grotesque caricature of the female form looks more Rabelaisian than 'contemporary Rabley valley', and at first seems out of place here. It is however by the Calne sculptor Richard Cowdy http://www.calneartists.co.uk/richard_cowdy.html who was inspired to create it by 'the Willendorf Venus', an ancient statuette of a similar figure but only 11 cm high, which was discovered in 1908 by an archaeologist in Austria. Made of oolitic limestone, the original 'fertility doll' is said to date from around 23,000 BC Details and picture at
