English: "Sept 8, 1940
Dear Dad: I received your letter Friday, and read, with interest, the clippings in regatd to the elevation of some thirty-two hundred to the rank of officer and gentleman. From what I gather these men all hold commissions in the reserves and it applies only to the army-not the Marine Corps. The only way it would be possible for me to obtain a commission would be through political influence and I doubt if even that could be done. It would have to come direct from the Secretary of Navy, but there are too many obstacles, such as age, you know I’ll be twenty seven in October, to be overcome. I doubt if the Marine Corps would countenance the commissioning of a corporal unless it came through the regular channels. However if you think some strings could be pulled it wouldn’t hurt to try. Things go on about the same here. Bigger and better mosquitoes, smaller and deadlier sand flies and the eternal firing and" From the Edward L.
