English: "Obvious seasonal handicap, Chingwangtao was not impressive. In fact from what I’ve seen of all China, the Japs are quite welcome to it. From what I’ve seen the Japs are only acquiring a nation peopled by a starving race and unless they establish breed lines, the entire Chinese population will die of either starvation or disease. However they’ve existed for centuries the way they do now and I suppose they will go on existing for centuries more.
While anchored in the Whangpo, and leaning over the fantail observing the natives salvage their dinners from under our garbage shoot, I came to the conclusion that these people, at least, are worse off than I and I really felt thankful for the dinner the U.S. Government had just" From the Edward L.
