English: "January 6, 1939
Dear Dad: I am stealing a little of the Navy’s time. According to the prescribed rules and regulations I am supposed to be on watch, keeping always on the alert and observing everything that takes place within view or hearing, but I believe the ship to be safe for the present, at least until I finish this letter. We are now about fifty miles off the Chinese coast and about the same distance from the Yangtze river, our destination being Shanghai. We were in Shanghai the 30th of last month, but stayed only for a day shoving off for Chinwangtao which is at the very northern coastal tip of China and where the Great Wall reaches the sea. Outside of the Great Wall, Chinawangtao has little or nothing to recommend it. Of course anyplace being seen through snow flurries and under a dull gray winter’s sky, seems drab and colorless, but in spite of the" From the Edward L.
