English: "August 31, 1940
Dear Dad: I have a little time to myself and am using it to dash off a few lines. We are now stationed at Camp MacDougal, located on one of those small islands that dot the Carolina coast about nineteen miles north east of Parris Island. It is indeed a lovely spot. Mosquitos, sand flies, snakes, sand, marsh, pines and palmettos. God what a hole! No place to go and nothing to do, but fire those damned guns. We are here for the purpose of calibration-the collection of firing and ballistic data-preparatory to our embarkation for Cuba which was to occur around the 15th of October, but from the looks of things might happen in 1942, and the destination will then be Alaska, or some other place as far from the original point as the vacillating minds of the high command can make it.
