San Pedro, Cal. Dear Dad: I know it’s been a long time since I’ve written, but the facilities aboard ship are not exactly conducive to keeping up a regular correspondence. I’ll admit that I have plenty of time on my hands, in fact I have enough time to write a book, but when I have the time I don’t have the opportunity. As I’ve probably told you before there are ninety-six men in this detachment and the entire compliment eat, sleep and live in three compartments, each not much larger than a good sized living room. We’re packed on here like sardines and have about as much privacy as the proverbial gold fish. Every other day I rate liberty, but who wants to go ashore when it means a half an hour ride in a motor boat with a good soaking thrown in? I like soldiering, but when it comes to" From the Edward L.
