Summary

[edit]
Description
English: "Diseases ranging from syphilis to chancroids. The doctors do their vest, giving lectures before every port is touched, but apparently every man believes he is one of God’s anointed and will not be stricken by any of the social diseases. I believe, there are no foundation for these figures, that about fifty percent of the men take precautions, the rest plunge heedlessly in, either trusting to luck or not giving a damn.

The reason for this outburst results from the fact that the chap, who sleeps right next to me, the distance separating us being less than an inch, turned into the sick bay yesterday with a penile ulcer. Today a blood test showed a positive reaction; syphilis, plus four.

January 25, 1939

Last night the lights going out put a stop to my letter writing. Tonight a rough sea makes it almost impossible to write. That’s probably a poor alibi for my rotten penmanship, but the sea really is kicking up.

China was fine. I could see no evidences of the horrible war, undeclared,"
