English: "Oct. 1, 1941
Dear Dad: I have no excuse to offer for my failure to write for the past month save that of utter exhaustion. I’ve worked hard and long, for the past two months, and laboring under this boiling sun takes everything out of me. The only thing I’m fit for, after a day’s work, is bed, and even the knowledge that I should write a letter can’t keep me out of it. I was in charge of the “shore patrol”, two weeks ago, in Santiago de Cuba. Quite a town, and I really enjoyed myself.
