| Description |
English: "Saturday evening and the full fury of the hurricane was not felt until about four P.M. Sunday, but with true governmental efficiency not a step was taken to secure either equipment or personnel until the wind had reached a velocity of about seventy miles per hour. Trees were uprooted, barracks blown down, the main station covered with three feet of water, one of the water towers crashed, shearing off a wing of the hospital, which had fortunately been evaluated, and the next morning boats turned up in the queerest places. There was a good sized launch in the center of the parade ground and a fishing boat parked in the middle of the main highway. The city of Beaufort was entirely wiped out and dependent on us for supplies."
