Summary[edit]
DescriptionLetter, 16 August 1940, page 2 of 4.jpg |
English: "Something else besides sympathize, but my hands are tied. At least for two more year.
There is absolutely no chance of my obtaining a commission unless some strings could be pulled from the outside. Do you know anyone? We had quite a bit of excitement the last four days. Sunday, the worst hurricane in the history of this section swept over Parris Island and the surrounding countryside. The damage here is estimated at $500,000, but from all appearances it should exceed that by at least half again. I have never seen such destruction and chaos. The retreat of the British in Flanders had nothing on the retreat of the Marines before General Nature. Rifles, packs, tents and equipment of all sorts were scattered from one end of the island to the other, our battalion being the only organization to escape any serious damage. The storm warnings were posted" From the Edward L. Parke Collection (COLL/5627) at the Archives Branch, Marine Corps History Division OFFICIAL USMC PHOTOGRAPH |
