English: "August 16, 1940
Dear Dad: I am sitting here like an African explorer. The heat is damn near unbearable and my garb consists of a sun-helmet-nothing else. The flies drone about in squadrons, but they will soon be relived by the mosquitos who generally come on patrol about this time. The barracks are unusually quiet. Only three radios and twenty arguments going at the same time. Of course the arguments are about that universal service subject-women. I received your letter yesterday and was really sorry to hear about your boils and the crops. It seems a damned shame that you can’t get a break with the weather. The boils could be endured. It takes but about a month to clear one of those up, while the loss of a crop means both money and a year’s labor. I wish I could do" From the Edward L.
