English: "Failed to put any powder in the third gun. Nice going Navy.
One thing surprised me very much. By going to the up wind side of a turret and laying flat on the deck-this last was to avoid being knocked flat by the concussion-you could follow the three shells from the muzzle of the guns to the target. When the shell struck the water it would skip like a flat stone on a mill pond some of them skipping as many as four times. As far as I could judge there were about 3,000 yds. Between skips. More later, Ed" From the Edward L. Parke Collection (COLL/5627) at the Archives Branch, Marine Corps History Division OFFICIAL USMC PHOTOGRAPH |
