[edit]DescriptionLetter, 12 May 1941, page 3 of 6.jpg |
English: "Battle stations.
Our new gun positions are located on a bluff overlooking the bay, where we are able to control the approach of surface craft as well as the most probable areas for an attack by air. Everything proceeded very smoothly as we went into position, laid cables, oriented the guns and settled down for condition watches. (A condition watch is one in which the battery expects an immediate attack. All hands eat, sleep and live on the guns) The “enemy”, represented by patrol bombers, came in the late afternoon and was driven off, theoretically, by our devastating fire. After our first brush we could feel reasonable sure that he, the enemy, would subject us" From the Edward L.
