Summary
[edit]DescriptionLetter, 11 March 1941, page 5 of 6.jpg |
English: "About the only clean part of the town is the dock where the boats tie up, the rest of the place looks the way the movies might depict the jumping off place of civilization.
There is one street, usually knee deep in mud, and it is lined with bars. The bars on one side are built over the river and as you sit there sipping your rum the odors arising from the water, which the entire town uses as a sewer, defy any attempt to describe on paper. The dance floors are surrounded with small cubicles where the ladies of the night ply their trade, but the entire thing is so open and so matter of fact that it produces an air of unmorality rather than immorality."
