On 30 June 1939 the ‘New Zealand Listener’ was first published as the official journal of the government’s Broadcasting Service. Originally created to list details of radio programmes (hence the title ‘Listener’) it was initially instructed to only publish information related to broadcasting. The journal quickly moved beyond this remit however and, under the direction of founding editor Oliver Duff, expanded its scope to include politics, world events, arts, and entertainment, among other topics. Today the Listener is still one of the most widely read weekly publications in New Zealand. One early feature of the Listener was a regular health advice column, written by staff from the Health Department Hygiene Division. Articles addressing common diseases and good health practices were published and reader’s questions were answered. This 1941 letter, in response to a reader’s request about a cure for acne, gives a list of ingredients and detailed instructions for an acne treatment. This list includes toxic ingredients, and acetone which is today used in nail polish remover. This letter is included in a file of correspondence about the health advice columns, which ran from at least 1941 to 1963. However there is no follow up correspondence from the reader to indicate whether the treatment worked or not.
