Summary[edit]

Description

Reproduction of a snapshot of William Arthur McMurray (1879-1959) of Gilmour, Ontario, made by Richard Lumbers.

Original loaned by Mrs Jenkins of Gilmour in August 1965.

Mr. W.A. McMurray came from Rawdon Township in 1898. He taught school in St. Ola and in Gunter. He spent his summer holidays working in the general store of Mr. Norman Greene at Gilmour. In 1905 he took over this business. In conjunction with this business Mr. McMurray operated the telephone system plus a Dept. of Lands & Forests, (Forestry in those days) telephone for fire communication. He bought and sold logs, handled fur; had the Chevrolet car agency as soon as it was available, he was a justice of the peace and, on occasion issued the odd burial certificate, did local surveying, transacted business and legal affairs for the settlers even doing most if not all of the correspondence for them. Different settlers never received a patent for their land until it was obtained for them by Mr. McMurray. He was Reeve for a short time and Secretary of the school board for nine consecutive years. He was an extremely intelligent man. Mr. McMurray died in 1959.
