On July 7 1942, the New Zealand House of Representatives tabled a message from the Polish National Council, London who represented the Polish Parliament in exile. The two page declaration contained “a call to the Parliaments of all free nations”, and the Council’s “protest against the crimes committed by the Germans upon Polish citizens”. The New Zealand government was urged to “help maintain the moral resistance of her [Poland’s] exhausted people at home.” The letter above accompanied the declaration. Just two weeks later on July 22nd German forces began the mass deportation of Jewish inhabitants from the Warsaw Ghetto. Thousands were transported by train to the Treblinka death camp, under the guise of resettlement.
