A cosmic odyssey captured over 525 hours of dedicated amateur astrophotography efforts, unveiling the majesty of Cassiopeia A's supernova remnant

Français : Cette image de Cassiopeia A, un rémanent de supernova (SNR) dans la constellation de Cassiopée, a été prise dans le cadre d'un projet du groupe d'astrophotographie amateur "Deep Sky Collective" (DSC) - au total 13 personnes ont contribué à ce projet. Après avoir créé la photo amateur la plus profonde de Cas A, nous, le DSC, nous sommes associés à l'équipe NASA Chandra pour combiner nos données - le résultat est une image complète mettant en valeur une multitude d'émissions captivantes dans Cas A en utilisant à la fois des données amateurs et professionnelles. Ce rémanent de supernova est situé à environ 11 000 années-lumière de distance et a un diamètre de 10 années-lumière. Parmi tous les SNRs, pourquoi choisir Cas A ? Eh bien, ce SNR est particulièrement spécial car il est le rémanent de la deuxième supernova la plus récente, datant d'environ 1681. Cela en fait une cible très intrigante pour la recherche professionnelle car il contient des informations précieuses sur les différentes étapes d'une supernova et les différents processus qui s'y produisent. En fait, Cas A est l'un des objets les plus étudiés dans le ciel nocturne, en particulier dans le domaine des SNRs, en raison de sa proximité et de sa jeunesse. Il s'est avéré inestimable pour comprendre les processus de nucléosynthèse, la physique des chocs et l'évolution des SNRs, entre autres choses. Après avoir collecté un impressionnant 525h de données sur ce SNR, notre équipe a pu montrer des parties du SNR qui n'avaient pas été captées par des amateurs auparavant - avec ce projet, nous avons pu montrer qu'en travaillant collectivement, les amateurs peuvent révéler des détails cachés dans des objets bien connus du ciel profond et peuvent établir une présence dans la recherche scientifique professionnelle.

English: This image of Cassiopeia A, a supernova remnant (SNR) in the constellation Cassiopeia was taken as part of a project of the amateur astrophotography group “Deep Sky Collective” (DSC) - in total 13 people contributed to this project. After creating the deepest yet amateur photo of Cas A we, the DSC teamed up with the NASA Chandra team to combine our data - the result is a comprehensive image showcasing a multitude of captivating emissions in Cas A using both amateur and professional data.

This supernova remnant is located approximately 11,000 light-years away and spans 10 light-years in diameter. Out of all the SNRs, why choose Cas A? Well, this SNR is particularly special because is the remnant of the second most recent supernova, dating back to around 1681. This makes it a highly intriguing target for professional research as it contains valuable insights into the various stages of a supernova and the different processes occurring within one. In fact, Cas A is one of the most extensively studied objects in the night sky, especially in the realm of SNRs, due to its proximity and youth. It has proven invaluable in understanding nucleosynthesis processes, shock physics, and the evolution of SNRs, among other things.

After collecting a staggering 525h of data on this SNR, our team was able to show parts in the SNR that hadn’t been picked up by amateurs before - with this project we were able to show that by working as a collective, amateurs are able to unveil hidden details in well known Deep Sky objects and are able to establish a presence in professional science research
