Description
English:

This hand-colored print of an 1865 Curtis & Miller photograph of Seattle was created in 1915 by E. Jenner for the Washington Title Insurance Company. Included in the display is a guide listing some of the landmarks visible in the image. The photograph was taken from about Main Street, looking North along Commercial Street (now First Avenue South). Visible at the end of Commercial Street is Henry L. Yesler's (1810-1892) mill; until a fire burned down the mill in 1879, Commercial Street did not go all the way north through town, but stopped at Mill Street (now Yesler Way), which runs from east to west towards Elliott Bay. In the distance behind the mill, the original building of the Territorial University of Washington (now University of Washington) sits at the location now occupied by the Fairmont Olympic Hotel on University Street between Fourth Avenue and Fifth Avenue.

1865 is decades too early to actually be by [Asahel] Curtis and Miller (before they were born!) Presumably they worked from an anonymous, old negative, and E. Jenner was downstream of Curtis & Miller
