[edit]DescriptionWorld's smallest artwork since 2011 Hommage to Kandinsky by Alfred Gockel and Felix Holzner.jpg |
English: Felix Holzner, a physicist at the ETH University in Zürich Switzerland explains: My research focuses on a new machine, called "NanoFrazor", which can fabricate extremely small "Nanostructures". To show the research community how versatile our new nanofabrication tool is, I choose to chisel a 3D relief that resembles Alfred Gockel’s painting "Hommage to Kandinsky". The Nanorelief is so small that you cannot see it even under a light microscope. A special microscope (Atomic Force Microscope) was needed to create the gray-scale image of this relief. This might seem ridiculous, but from a researchers point of view this image looks really impressive, because it nicely shows the strength of our new fabrication technology. That’s why the image will be used on the homepage of the university’s faculty and shall also appear in scientific magazines. |
