Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it. Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tiff files

Hi, Do you understand, how we use tiff files on the project. We don't crop them, rather convert and crop. Please see this image for an explanation. Any questions, happy to help? jpeg files are used on websites, because they scale better. Broichmore (talk) 20:16, 13 January 2024 (UTC)

You can get (direct from this museum's website) jpeg equivalents of these very large tiff files. Just saying. Broichmore (talk) 20:23, 13 January 2024 (UTC)

I agree that TIFFs aren't an ideal format, but I'm not the original uploader. I was under the impression from Commons:Media_for_cleanup#Unnecessary_borders that it's fine to overwrite files with crops that remove colour patches & borders which are not part of the image, are TIFFs exempt from this?

The JPEG equivalents on the website are a good point though, maybe we can replace the current imported TIFFs with them? RedAuburn (talk) 20:43, 13 January 2024 (UTC)

fae, uploaded the files in the first place in collaboration with the museum. They are not available on their website, special access is required. There's no rule as such, that they can’t be cropped, but of course cropping is a filter, and all filters diminish, as well as potentially introduce corruption.

Tiff files, and some say png's too, are reference files, for conversion to jpg (use GIMP or photoshop). So why alter them in the first place.

Yes, I agree, jpg's are preferred for general use, for multiple reasons, most importantly size without loss of definition, and as I said they scale better. Broichmore (talk) 21:23, 13 January 2024 (UTC)

Noticed there were reversions here, This is because the original reference files contain colour indices, so you can check the art is properly rendered on any derivatives. Well, that's my take on it. Broichmore (talk) 19:37, 15 January 2024 (UTC)

Please do not overwrite files

I noticed that you uploaded a file using the same name as another file, which already existed on Commons. Overwriting an existing file should not be done except when making minor, uncontroversial corrections, so the file has been restored to its previous version. If the file that you attempted to upload is within our project scope and is in the public domain or published under a free license, please upload it again under a different name. Thank you. Hiya,

thanks for reverting the crops.

As discussed above, Commons:Media for cleanup#Unnecessary borders suggested that these types of crops would be uncontroversial (In fact, I even mentioned that I wanted to do this clean-up as part of my request for autopatrol permissions)
