Shoulder Sleeve Insignia[edit]

  • Description:
  1. An equilateral triangle, one point up, above a horizontal tab attached in base, the overall dimensions of triangle and tab is 4 1/16 inches in height and 3 7/8 inches in width.
  2. The triangle is divided into three sections, the upper section yellow, the dexter section blue and the sinister section red, overall a gun bendwise in front of a tank track and wheels all black surmounted by a red lightning flash bendwise sinister.
  3. In the apex the Arabic numeral "1" in black, all within a 1/8 inch green border.
  4. The tab is yellow with a 1/8 inch green border with the inscription "OLD IRONSIDES" in black letters 5/16 inch in height.

Combat Service Identification Badge[edit]

  • A silver color metal and enamel device 2 inches (5.08 cm) in height consisting of a design similar to the shoulder sleeve insignia.

Symbolism[edit]

  1. Yellow, blue, and red are the colors of the branches from which armored units were formed.
  2. The tank tread, gun, and lightning flash are symbolic of mobility, power, and speed.
  3. The division's designation is in Arabic numerals.

Background[edit]

  1. The shoulder sleeve insignia was originally approved without the tab on 1940-11-22.
  2. The tab was authorized as a separate item on 1956-02-21.
  3. The insignia was changed to a one-piece insignia on 1970-11-05.

Notes[edit]

  1. The Shoulder Sleeve Insignia is worn on all uniforms except the Blue Service Uniform.
    The Combat Service Identification Badge is a simplified miniature version of the SSI, and is worn on the Blue Service Uniform.
