Transparency issue with IE6[edit]

{{editprotected}}

Try loading http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page in IE6 (or http://ipinfo.info/netrenderer/index.php) and you will notice this image has a transparentcy issue.--Svgalbertian (talk) 16:45, 4 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I looked into the issue, and I believe it is because the image is PNG-24. If it is saved as PNG-8 I beleive it will solve the issue (ref [1]). Further dicussion here. --Svgalbertian (talk) 17:25, 4 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I found an alternate solution that will not reduce the images quality and will mask the issue for the majority of users. When this image is displayed in older browsers without proper PNG support the background color defaults to a dark grey. To get around this we can modify the default background color to match the background color of the default skin. This will hide the issue for users with older browsers who are also using the default skin. I have taken the liberty to implement this fix using TweakPNG . The resulting file is at File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-en-(background fix).png. Can someone with the proper permissions please copy that file to here? --Svgalbertian (talk) 19:43, 4 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Vector version available[edit]

{{Editprotected}}

Please add {{vva|Wikipedia-logo-v2-en.svg}} to the description page—or even open it for normal edits (i.e. protect only against reuploading), it’s used on less than 300 pages, since the SVG version is used if possible. --Tacsipacsi (talk) 16:44, 2 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Hedwig in Washington: Could you please explain why you haven’t unprotected the description page? (No problem, just I would like to see an explanation.) --Tacsipacsi (talk) 15:51, 9 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Just because it's a raster graphic doesn't mean it can be unprotected. The logo is highly visible and in use on ~ 50 pages. WP logos are all protected. It saves a lot of time and embarrassment when there are a few less vandals around. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 02:59, 10 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Unprotecting has nothing to do with file format. I asked it because this file is used relatively rarely (many files are not protected despite of being used several times more) and not on high-traffic pages. (Where is it “highly visible”? On user pages? Or project pages with daily views of up to ten dozens? Commons main page has a daily view of around 100,000; English Wikipedia has around 20,000,000. 287 out of 291 Wikipedia main pages had more than 120 views in daily average in the last month.) Anyway, editing the file description page can’t do much harm, and, of course, it’s on my watchlist and I don’t plan to remove it. --Tacsipacsi (talk) 13:15, 10 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
