There was a unique fund raising event to restore the USS Texas during the latter part of the 20th century. The schoolchildren of Texas and various other locals placed 5 gallon water bottles ALL OVER THE PLACE, and requested donations of pennies. The effort worked and the ship was towed to drydock  in Galveston, and restoration completed and the ship re-floated to specs. The pursuant re-towing back to her berth at San Jacinto was filled with large fanfare.
