Upper & Lower Kingdom is the first painting I did on moving to Vincennes in the autumn of 1968. As I was painting in France on a grant from the Chaloner Prize, I sent a mounted photograph of it to Sargent Shriver, then the American Ambassador, offering it for his official residency. He had it sent to the cultural attache' which led to it and two other paintings being hung in Junes artistes americains held at le Centre Culturel American on rue Dragon in Paris in November of 1969 and a picture of me in its "informations & documents" publication in black and white with Father, Vulture, Holy Butterfly which unfortunately did not get hung.
