What's the evidence that this man was tortured due to the charge of being homosexual. Could someone provide a source for this claim. Thanks gugganij 12. Sep, 13:52 (CET)
I have done a little research on this picture. It appears in John Swain's The Pleasures of the Torture Chamber (1931) opposite page 172. Curiously the picture in Swain is the mirror image of those on Wikipedia and Commons. Unfortunately Swain does not source his pictures, but the caption reads: "Nicholas Burton suffering the Tortures of the Inquisition".
Nicholas Burton is a character who appears in Foxe's Book of Martyrs. Apparently he was an English merchant who was burned for "heresy" in Spain. Nothing indicates that he might have been homosexual.
But as yet I haven't managed to trace the origin of the picture. —Laurence Boyce 18:23, 23 December 2005 (UTC)
