I tried something yesterday with selection of areas (The GIMP), and it was much better (contrast in background etc...). It was only a careless attempt, and I destroyed it. I have no time now, but i'll be back here soon.
This picture deserves a careful attention IMO...

- I'm glad you're interested in doing more with the picture. (I'm still very much on a learning curve with selecting the things I want in the GIMP, so I'm happy to leave this to you for now.) I've now uploaded the original file in the history in case that's useful. I'd be happy to send you a link to the RAW file too, if you want. The same goes for the similar photo I just uploaded.
