“The United States, 1783-1803” Insets: The State of Franklin, 1784-1788. Early distribution of the Public Lands (Ohio). From The Historical Atlas by William R. Shepherd, 1923.

The mapmaker incorrectly shows the island of New Orleans as part of West Florida. It was not. The island of New Orleans was transferred to the U.S. along with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. West Florida was not. West Florida was separated from the island of New Orleans by the waterway formed by the Iberville River, Amite River, Lake Maurepas, Pass Manchac, Lake Pontchartrain, and the Rigolets.
