where is this?[edit]

Though I've changed/ref'd the cat to Category:Gulf of Georgia, I'm uncertain of the route of the Seattle-Vancouver train...but noting the Alex Fraser Bridge in the view I'm thinking this is the South Arm of the Fraser in Delta.  ??.Skookum1 (talk) 13:33, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

File:Southern BC coast from train.jpg is its partner....looks to me to be from Boundary Bay/Mud Bay, Roberts Bank Superport is at left rear.Skookum1 (talk) 13:39, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
They were taken 1 min apart at probably 50mph train speed. With this one we could probably find the two channel depth markers and the shore pilons in Google. The railway you can see parallel to Hwy 99, north of where Hwy 91 begins. The track loops around the shore of Mud Bay. We could walk the little orange guy around from there in Google maps to get the same views and nail down camera geodata.--Canoe1967 (talk) 13:58, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
OK....I've been busy btw creating categories and sorting things in Category:British Columbia and elsewhere; see my usercontributions...created Category:Gulf of Georgia like the wikipedia one; the Strait of Georgia strictly doesn't include e.g. Sansum Narrows, Howe Sound, Baynes Sound.....the Gulf does, it also includes Boundary Bay, which the official definition of Georgia Strait most definitely does not (it ends at the 49th Parallel south of the ferry terminal). I'm been wondering if parent cats are to be displayed here, I've noticed a lot of redundancies.....Skookum1 (talk) 14:08, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The exif gives us times to 1/2 sec. 2010:09:03 18:46:38.50 for this image and 2010:09:03 18:45:25.50 for the other. http://regex.info/exif.cgi gives lots more detailed data than the commons exif. The camera either doesn't have GPS or the creator had GPS off. I would say the water body is def Mud Bay (salt) east of Pt. Roberts.--Canoe1967 (talk) 14:24, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This one File:Across The River.jpg, that's Savona isn't it?Skookum1 (talk) 14:09, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Google maps may help with that one. We should email them to put camereras on trains as well. Could be Savona or Ashcroft?--Canoe1967 (talk) 14:24, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Definitely not Ashcroft, the Thompson is fast-flowing and narrow there, I've been around that place a lot; and this lake could only be Kamloops Lake. I was wondering if maybe it was a 'burb of Kamloops, and wasn't sure which side it's on, this says CN which I guess is the north side of the lake...so wouldn't be Tranquille.Skookum1 (talk) 17:17, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think it is a town. It looks like a mill site with a beehive burner on the left right. Probably between Kamloops an Sorrento. Adams Lake has heavy logging and it could be part of that industry. The mill may be at the mouth of a creek/river/water chutes that were used to move logs. That could narrow it down on Google maps.--Canoe1967 (talk) 17:35, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Savona has a beehive burner.....and the hills around Shuswap Lake are not as barren, this is definitely Kamloops Lake. I have some 1940s pics my father took, I can upload some. Definitely the Thompson Country.Skookum1 (talk) 02:17, 31 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It is the eastbound train if that is any help. The westbound was a redeye from Salmon Arm about midnight to Vancouver about 9am. The eastbound was Kamloops at about 6-8am, IIRC. Only two a day, one west, the other east.--Canoe1967 (talk) 17:49, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There are tracks on the north and south east of Kamloops. I think it is the track north of the water looking at the mill east of Savona at Millers Crossing.--Canoe1967 (talk) 18:02, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

As the photographer:

  • I don't have GPS in my camera.
  • Unless I am very confused about where Kamloops is, I was nowhere near Kamloops. As I say in the description, this was on the Seattle-Vancouver train. Doesn't that hug the coast, coming through White Rock? - Jmabel ! talk 22:13, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

WE're discussing two photos here, sorry should have kept comments about Kamloops Lake to that picture's talkpage or on Canoe1967's.Skookum1 (talk) 02:17, 31 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
