I've had two questions about this map so far, so I'm moving the discussion about them here. QuartierLatin1968 17:20, 23 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Map of percentage Welsh speakers by area[edit]

What statistical survey is the information on this map taken? Is it based on the 2001 census? 'Lloffiwr' the preceding unsigned comment is by 80.189.242.107 (talk • contribs)

In a word, yes. If I remember correctly, it counts everybody who can read or write or speak or understand Welsh, and any combination thereof. (The census conveniently provides a breakdown for all four skills.) QuartierLatin1968 21:32, 11 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your prompt reply. 'Lloffiwr'

Cwestiynnau[edit]

Hi, I have some questions about Commons:Image:Siaradwyr y Gymraeg ym Mhrif Ardaloedd Cymru.png.

  1. What is the source of the data?
  2. Are there no counties in Wales with between 37.5% and 50% Welsh speakers?

Thanks! User:Angr 10:27, 23 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  1. The 2001 census. As I said to 'Lloffiwr', I'm pretty sure I was counting 'all skills' ... although it's possible I omitted those who could understand Welsh only, and had no other Welsh skills. (The numbers aren't wildly different anyway, proportionately speaking.)
  2. Nac oes. Hence the widespread (if simplistic) perception that there's a discrete divide between West Wales where Welsh is spoken quite widely, and the rest of the country where it's a minority affair. QuartierLatin1968 17:20, 23 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
