Badly adjusted[edit]

The problems are:

  1. The tonal contrast is too great- the very dark blues have turned black and the pale areas are bleached out.
  2. The quality of light in the paintings indicates that it is evening. The light on the faces has been adjusted from mauve-pink to to pinky-pink, destroying the sense of cool evening light. All the other colours have been put out by this adjustment.
  3. Look at the child's hat. In the version from the Chicago Art Institute, it is clear that the parts of the hat which appear black, or very dark here are blue, with touches of Virdian (a type of green). There is a lot of viridian in this picture. The quality of this paint is transparent. In places in this version it has been made so dark as to appear black.
  4. Look at the child's dress. It has lost most of the details of light blue, and cool grey.
  5. Look at the elder sister's dress. It is actually blue, with quite a lot of dark Violet in the shadows, and touches of lighter blue. Here it is almost black with blue patches and a few light bits (too light!)
  6. The whole background has lost its evening tonality.
  7. There is a considerable loss of detail all over.

This is the better version [1]
