As their titular grouping implies, these iconic works, no matter what their degree of abstraction, tell a story or perhaps better stand for a story. I am not an abstract expressionist in these works in Paris; I'm simply using the medium specificity that a whole generation had learned from them in the service of a pictorial structure where savoring the tactile manipulation of material can be simultaneously experienced while reflecting on the human story represented.
