Caption errors

[edit]

This photograph is incorrectly captioned. The individual on the left is not George Farr, but Lieutenant Governor Karl Rolvaag, then running for governor of Minnesota.

The Kennedy library has the same photograph, correctly captioned:

https://www.jfklibrary.org/asset-viewer/archives/JFKWHP/1962/Month%2010/Day%2006/JFKWHP-1962-10-06-C (accession # ST-B452-20-62)

The National Archives have been notified of the mistaken caption on their record of this photograph.

You changed the filename references in the "other versions" section; I undid that and moved your correction to a "Description" field which can also be shown, and is for local, more detailed descriptions. Carl Lindberg (talk) 15:11, 21 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Kablammo: Thanks for letting me know about the issue! This photo is from the JFK Library (which is a branch of the National Archives), so I'm not how this discrepancy across the two catalogs occurred. We should be able to correct the original description, but it can take weeks (at the earliest) for updates to the catalog to propagate, so it's good to note it on Wikimedia Commons. It is useful to preserve the original description unchanged, even if it is in error, so that we don't cause confusion for editors who click through to the source page and see different metadata, so I think Carl's approach is best. Thank you both. I found one other error in this series of photographs, and wrote the JFK Library as follows:
Error in photograph data

to kennedy.library
Hello. The photograph in question is:
ST-B452-18-62
at:
https://www.jfklibrary.org/asset-viewer/archives/JFKWHP/1962/Month%2010/Day%2006/JFKWHP-1962-10-06-C
The individual between Rolvaag and Karth is identified as Elmer L. Andersen. While Andersen was then governor, he was a Republican and was running for reelection, and it is doubtful that he appeared at this partisan political event. The individual shown in the photograph is actually Senator Eugene McCarthy.
<end>
Since that email I found additional confirmation. Senator McCarthy was with Kennedy that day, as shown by another photograph taken on October 6 in the motorcade:
https://www.jfklibrary.org/asset-viewer/archives/JFKWHP/1962/Month%2010/Day%2006/JFKWHP-1962-10-06-C accession # ST-B452-28-62 (scroll right to the image)
and footage from the rally. John Kennedy's 1962 Visit to Minnesota DFL Bean Feed & 1988 Interviews WCCO-TV (video; clearly shows McCarthy on stage with Kennedy)
Postcript: The foregoing link is now dead, but the first photograph in the archive link shows Humphrey, Kennedy, and McCarthy and others on stage at the Bean Feed. Kablammo (talk) 00:01, 5 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
At the time, the Minnesota governor and lieutenant did not run on a slate, and could be in different parties. Andersen, a Republican, was running for reelection against Rolvaag, his Democratic lieutenant governor.

A (belated) update: This last error (listing Gov. Andersen instead of Sen. McCarthy) was corrected by the Kennedy library. Kablammo (talk) 16:42, 4 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
