Moved from Talk:Pirate_Parties_International - ArnoldPlaton (talk) 08:07, 25 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know how to upload the svg after changing it, but here are some changes that should be made to it:

  • Cyprus is active[1]
  • Estonia is active[2]
  • Kazakhstan is active[3]
  • Mexico is active[4]
  • Uruguay is active[5]

      • PiratePartiesMap16.svg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:PiratePartiesMap16.svg), the new version of the map, is full of mistakes. I'm a member of PP.Ro, and I can inform you that there is no registered party here (color black) only an active unregistered one (color blue). Also, i have not heard of any party being REGISTERED in either Belgium, Italy, Brazil, Serbia, Australia, Russia or Kazakhstan. Also, althought there has been a message on PPI about a pirate party in China[6], this is not sufficient to assume that there is indeed an ACTIVE PP there. Please, if you encounter the file PiratePartiesMap16.svg (in other language wikipedias) change pages back to the map named: PiratePartiesMap15.svg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:PiratePartiesMap15.svg) . I have already reverted the changeon the PP International, Pirate Party (Sweden) and United States Pirate Party —Preceding unsigned comment added by ArnoldPlaton (talkcontribs) 14:23, 7 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
        • The changes were based on their list of Ordinary Members (black) and their list of existing parties (blue). I somehow misunderstood black for being a PPI member instead of an officially registered political party, I'm sorry for that and I've fixed it in the updated image. I also checked all the refs on the individual pirate parties on their website and concluded that indeed Guatemala and China should indeed be just red. Map should be up to date now. Btw, what sources are being used to determine whether a party is officially registered as a political party? Those sources aren't listed anywhere now. If you spot mistakes please fix (upload new derivative) instead of regress to an older map. Other wikis around the world aren't gonna like a bunch of undos especially if we can hardly communicate with many of them. But incremental map updates even a bunch in a short time aren't gonna make alarm bells go off ^_^ --Lord Alderaan (talk) 11:17, 10 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
          • 1. The map is about the current state of Pirate Party registration in various countries, not about PPI membership. You can create such a map, but keep the current function of PiratePartiesMapXX.svg
          • 2. You added members based on PPI member parties list, but that's not enough. Norway for instance was grey because its site does not work. Also South Africa should be red, as they only have activity on PPI forum. Also, Ireland should be blue because they have not gathered the necessary members to be registered (they only have 261 out of 300). Also the Lithuanian PP's site has been offline for a while, so Lithuania should be changed to red (they have a thread on PPI). Also, I don't think China should be featured as red, because one single message on PPI does not mean "discussion on PPI" (in my opinion); plus we don't know if it's People's Rep. of China or Republic Of China (aka. Taiwan), because both countries call themselves China. PS. Your map has a divided Germany - ArnoldPlaton (talk) 16:01, 10 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
            • I agree on all points. I forgot Ireland in my previous fix. You're right about China. There seems to be some activity in South Africa (outside the PPI forum) but it's hard to confirm. The German split happened because I fixed some of the issues in the map itself which caused the border to surface. In any case the world map being used was pretty crappy (bad or no country grouping, ill-defined borders, no group/object ids, etc) so I took a newer one and recolored all the countries. Updated image 16 itself so that we don't need to edit all the pages using it. --Lord Alderaan (talk) 10:37, 11 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Refreces list[edit]

Other Colors?[edit]

Wouldn't a few more colors look a bit nicer? What about this:

English (en): Distribution of Pirate Parties around the world

Whereas the "defunct" color would be optional, not sure if that would look that good on a representative map. I think that would also be quite difficult to include.. how big does a PP have to be before it's "decease"? But I think we should definitely include PPI member. --Saftorangen (talk) 18:53, 24 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • 1. Should't we have a different map for the PPI member/Nonmember diferentiation? Just asking
  • 2. I would also suggest a color for a "Non-political PP" or "PP ideas represented by other party". I'm suggesting this because Hungary has an NGO named Kalozpart (Pirate Party), which is represented politically by the LMP (green) party, which currently holds seats in parliament. Therefore, PP ideals are represented in the Hungarian Parliament, but the map does not show this
  • 3. I think instead of "Defunct" we should use something like "offline/inoperative"-ArnoldPlaton (talk) 08:07, 25 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, I found some time to think about it and made an example map that should be correct. --Saftorangen (talk) 13:46, 19 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

How is the map created?[edit]

I ask this question out of curiosity. Which tools are used to create the map? Is the tool a part of Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons? I can imagine that there are hundreds of color keyed world maps in Wikipedia, so it would be silly to invent them over and over again. --HelgeStenstrom (talk) 15:31, 3 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
