Cropped image[edit]

The cropped image uploaded by a user did not only crop the original image, it also distorted it. For example, when used on the German Wikipedia the image was also stretched in width, and the ship's height was distorted by being lowered in proportion to its length.

The copyright remains with the photographer, who composed what he believed to be a suitable artistic rendering of the subject. Others who dislike the photographers view of the subject are perfectly at liberty to take a camera and rephotograph the subject in a manner that appeals to their own subjective view of the subject. However, to distort someone else's work is akin to drawing a moustache on the Mona Lisa. IMHO that breaches the terms of the license that is as binding on wikipedia users as it is on other commercial users. The image does not "belong" to Commons, who merely have a license to "use" the image. Ownership and copyright remains with the photograhper. George.Hutchinson (talk) 15:05, 19 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Furthermore, as any photographer or artist will affirm, context is everything, and the sky is an important part of the composition. George.Hutchinson (talk) 15:09, 19 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
This was how the cropped version appeared on some Wikipedia pages. http://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Norwegian_Epic&stable=0&redirect=no George.Hutchinson (talk) 15:21, 19 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
