What's unusual about it is the magnification-- no idea how long a lens he used, but the whole thing only spans just over 20 degrees, so one computer-screen-width is comparable to the view thru a 600 mm lens on a 24 x 36 mm camera-- just over 3 degrees on my monitor. (If you want to check yours, the west face of the Citicorp tower in the foreground spans 3.4 horizontal degrees; the south face spans 1.4 degrees.)
Over near the left edge of the pic just short of the skyline are the [1] North Shore Towers just inside the NY city limits on the south side of the Grand Central Parkway, 22 km away. Then shift rightward to the top of the SE corner of the Citicorp tower. At 11:30 o'clock to that corner is a blue-banded tank [2] just touching the skyline, 36 km away. Closer to us, 1:30 to the corner of Citicorp, is a silver tank [3] in New Hyde Park.
(You guys all know you can switch from the Bird's Eye View to a vertical aerial and zoom out to get oriented?)
Much closer (11 km away) at 2:30 to the corner of Citicorp is the big "T" of the Port Authority building from the 1964 World's Fair [4] . Beyond the right leg of the "T", see that black arch sitting atop the skyline? That's the north arch of the Captree bridge [5] , 60 km away. Half a degree to the right of that, just below the skyline is a tank [6] in Hempstead, 31 km away; 2/3 of a degree farther right the white/red Copiague tank [7] is barely visible atop the skyline.
1+ degrees farther right, a group of four water tanks: two blue-banded tanks [8] about the same distance; between them a closer tank [9] ; and that sphere-atop-a-column blue tank [10] .
About 0.08 degree left of the left blue-band tank is the white cupola of Sewanhaka High School [11] ; 0.05 degree right of the tank is the white spire of a Hempstead church [12] .
1.4 degrees right of the blue sphere-on-a-column tank is another blue tank [13] just below the skyline; 0.07 degree to the right and much closer is the yellow-brick-and-green-copper cupola of Newtown High School [14] . A degree and a half to the right a tank [15] just touches the skyline; I guess that's the Belmont Park grandstand in between, but never have checked on that.
3/4 degree right of the last tank, the left one of three tanks that get farther left to right: [16] , [17] has its legs inside a cylinder, then the Merrick tank [18] touches the horizon.
A tenth of a degree right of the Merrick tank and much closer is the cupola of Forest Hills High School [19] almost in line with that stretch of Queens Blvd. 1 1/2 degrees farther right and about the same distance are three yellow-brick apartment towers [20] ; 1:30 to them is the prominent Elmont tank [21] and 0.4 degree farther right is a Baldwin tank [22] and righter still is a Freeport tank [23] .
