Different colors on different graphs?[edit]

Should the colors for the two images "Most popular edition of Wikipedia by country" and "Wikipedia_page_views_by_language_over_time" and the other images found on the "List of Wikipedias" articles be made the same? Why are they different in the first place? Jimw338 (talk) 14:41, 25 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
We discussed this subject on my talk page. What do you think? A455bcd9 (talk) 15:23, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Table statistics[edit]

Mistake?[edit]

According this in China English - 67.1%, Chinese - 2.0%. But in this map China has color of chinese. Why?--Kaiyr (talk) 16:28, 21 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't know that map, amazing thanks!
I think it's based on old data: "See also static version, with Overview and breakdown of pageviews By Country and By Language." links to https://stats.wikimedia.org/wikimedia/squids/SquidReportPageViewsPerCountryOverview.htm which says "Monthly requests or daily averages, for period: 1 Sep 2018 - 30 Sep 2018"
Would be amazing to update this map with new data provided by the Wikimedia Stats API. @Erik Zachte and ODimitrijevic (WMF):
I'll contact them. A455bcd9 (talk) 05:36, 23 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, you mentioned my name a few months ago. I am no longer involved in Wikipedia stats, since 2020. Cheers Erik Zachte (talk) 16:38, 6 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Some countries not displayed or displayed incorrectly[edit]

Great map! Needs some corrections: The label for Lebanon shows Malta. Cypress shows Andorra, as does Qatar. Andorra itself doesn't show a label. Keren - WMIL (talk) 09:50, 27 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Mistakes[edit]

Hello, I found mistakes in the Mediterranean countries. Cyprus is named Andorra, Lebanon is named Malta, Vatican City is named San Marino and South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands are named Grenada.

Also, Qatar is labeled Andorra. Plus, here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arabic_Wikipedia#/media/File:Most_popular_edition_of_Wikipedia_by_country.svg it says Arabic is in green, but there are two greens - Arabic and Chinese. Arabic is more of a teal than green. --RenesisX (talk) 04:18, 10 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I fixed the color on Wikipedia. Regarding the labels, feel free to correct them and upload a new file @RenesisX. A455bcd9 (talk) 18:48, 6 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Selection of languages[edit]

is there any reason you choose a color for german but not for japanese, which seems to be the second biggest language, following this statics (which is from 2018, I admit, but couldn't find newer data). Zorrolaf (talk) 22:32, 25 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Zorrolaf: Only countries most used in at least four territories are shown. A455bcd9 (talk) 19:30, 26 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@A455bcd9: thank you! Maybe it should be noted beneath the picture, outherwise it looks like discrimination of asian countries, even if they are one of the biggest Wikipedias. Or change the rule. To me it would have been interesting seeing immideatly how big (or small) the spread of this language is. Zorrolaf (talk) 17:38, 30 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Zorrolaf, yes it's already written: "Only countries most used in at least four territories are shown:" (I added it after you commented here on Dec 25) A455bcd9 (talk) 18:33, 30 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
hi @A455bcd9: thank you very much for speedy update!. Unfortunately I discovered two mistakes, or at least two conflicting information, maybe due to update difference.
in the map for Belgium appears french the most read language, but the dutch wikipedia says its dutch. On the other hand dutch isn't the most important Wikipedia language version in the netherlands, this seems to be the english: https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nederlandstalige_Wikipedia Zorrolaf (talk) 22:49, 30 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It's not a mistake, you can check all the data here (set April 2021 as the date): https://stats.wikimedia.org/#/en.wikipedia.org/reading/page-views-by-country/normal%7Ctable%7Clast-month%7C(access)~desktop*mobile-app*mobile-web%7Cmonthly A455bcd9 (talk) 22:57, 30 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Template about "China blocking Wikipedia"[edit]

Personally, i feel that this:

Tag shouldn't be there; Whilst China may have blocked wikipedia, that does not mean that it is innacessible. VPNs exist and that allows Wikipedia to be accessed. I suggest that we remove this template or at least add a little "* China has blocked Wikipedia" note to the map.

Thoughts? 56independent (talk) 08:25, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Very important notice[edit]

Hello. Since this patch on Wikistats, citing privacy reasons, some countries with non-free status on Freedom of the Net statistics have their statistics blanked out since June. I have filed a task on Phabricator to at least partially modify this change so we can see at least pageviews statistics for en, ru and national/regional Wikipedias of each country. Although for the most countries (Spanish, Arab states, Russia, Belarus, Turkey, Azerbaijan, China, Central Asia and Myanmar/Vietnam/Thailand, Iran/Afghanistan) we know the most popular version of Wikipedia (and the most popular WP there has formed a stable lead difficult to change soon), until this change is partially modified based on this proposal (I strongly disagree with this blanking) be very careful when updating, particularly with Uzbekistan as ru/uz Wikipedias are switching places often now. NikosLikomitros (talk) 23:52, 2 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I agree with you. A455bcd9 (talk) 14:17, 28 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Data used for the map[edit]

@A455bcd9: Could you publish the table of (country, top language, top views, second language, second views) that you get from the code, used to produce this map? That way we can see the top language for all of the "other" countries, and also how close the two are for the rest. This could be published as a Data: page and linked from the description here. --SJ+ 15:39, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Sj,
Data is here. Code is here. Feel free to add the Data: page. A455bcd9 (talk) 15:54, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
