South shore[edit]

Wrong caption, that is the north shore of Maui looking from east to west, not the south shore (which is arid, and lined with buildings and sandy beaches) (Radha 21:37, 8 December 2008 (UTC)).

Clearly you are mistaken. I took this photo and several landmarks are fairly obvious; Piiliani hwy, Huakini bay, Mamalu bay. google map. --Travis Thurston+ 22:32, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Please, we're all colleagues here. Travis, in an abstract way, you are right, but on Maui, the term "south shore" has a particular meaning and usage, and honestly, it is somewhat confusing. Radha is correct. Generally, the south shore of Maui is measured from Maʻalaea Bay to La Perouse Bay, give or take a few miles in each direction. This photo shows the south east side of Maui, facing north, I believe. Travis, if you look at a map of Maui, you'll have a 'a-ha' moment. You're not the first person to make this mistake; like I said it is confusing. :) Viriditas (talk) 11:35, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I can agree with the idea of this being a shot of the southeast side of Maui, taken from the southwest, facing northeast and I could see how someone may think this is a view of northshore. Can we all agree that the landmarks listed above are on the south or southeast? To clarify, the plane was flying south, over La Perouse. I know some people even call Kihei part of the southshore.:) thanks for attempting to help clear this up.--Travis Thurston+ 06:45, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Travis. This particular photograph is no longer really considered "La Perouse", and is farther east of that area, just beyond the cusp of what is considered "south shore". Kihei, is not just called south shore, it is categorized under that designation as I described above. Like I said previously, this is very confusing, because many writers (and published books) will also classify Kahului as south shore. In your favor, however, parts of the Kahikinui coastline are referred to as south shore or south Maui, but usually only in terms of its proximity to Makena. I think it is best to refer to your photograph as southeast Maui so as to not confuse it with what is usually termed "south shore". But, let's do more research on this and see what we can come up with. Sound good? Viriditas (talk) 08:09, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Aloha! Just wanted to followup on this point. I was looking around and found that this area is referred to as "southeast" [1], or just "east", [2]. Any thoughts? I'll change the file name to reflect this if we agree. I'd be happy with Southeast. --Travis Thurston+ 20:38, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think "southeast" fits perfectly, but wouldn't "Kahikinui coastline" be a better image name? Viriditas (talk) 03:56, 1 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not from Maui so I'm not going to argue about what's "south shore", but now it's even worse as far as naming. Kipahulu isn't even in the picture. The farthest point of land visible is Kaupo; Kipahulu might be theoretically visible in the far distance from this spot, but if so it's completely shrouded in clouds in the picture. As noted by Viriditas, it would properly be labelled Kahikinui, which encompasses the entire area from the lower left corner to where the highway reaches the ocean, and from the crest of the mountain to the coast. Per talk, the file has been renamed to be more accurate. This is the only upload under this name and all other duplicate files can be removed. Thanks. --Travisthurston (talk) 18:33, 3 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
