To whom it may concern[edit]

  1. Quoted source seems to neither list Herkomer, nor Raeburn.
  2. Portrayed person has, imo, some similarity to John Ruskin, rather than to Herkomer.
  3. In case, this engraving would have been created by a person deceased by 1947, such file would not be appropriate to COM before 2018.

  1. Quoted source was valid 14 months back when the image was uploaded - that particular page is constantly modified as new stock becomes available (they are a commercial business and not a museum or art gallery)
  2. Portrait may have similarities to John Ruskin, but is definitely of Hubert von Herkomer
  3. The self-portrait on which this engraving is based, was done before 1914. (Hubert von Herkomer (1849-1914)).
  4. If file is not appropriate for inclusion on Commons then it should be deleted. Rotational (talk) 15:59, 1 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
ad (1) - well, that is the way things are in www.
ad (2) - You're right that it is not Ruskin, either. On the person's identity, I like to quote my notes on en:User_talk:Rotational#Commons:File_talk:Hubert_von_Herkomer04.jpg: "H. shaved his beard for acting [main part, of course ;}] in an adaptation of Le Luthier de Cremone in his theatre, in 1890 and 1891 [according Baldry, A. L., 1901 [was typo, 1911] -- date of performances, and Herkomer: My School and My Gospel, 1908 - notes to have shaved his beard.]. Thanks, Wolfgang. [w.] 09:08, 30 January 2009 (UTC) Baldry also notes that he never wore a beard afterwards."
Both quoted books, plus one more which I did not yet read, Herkomer: "The Herkomers" are available online.
ad (3+4) - I, for myself, am not interested at all to remove any peaces of art from COM, but your opinion that the original Herkomer graphic or painting is PD due to its age (PD-Art; ~-Old), is wrong: This engraving (or whatever) is not a "mere photographic reproduction", therefore the engraver's decease applies for "expired copyright", i.e. it will be PD worldwide more than 70 years after, =acceptable for COM as of its nowaday's rules, in 2018.
I BTW meanwhile learned that, on enWP, there is no need for a "Fair Use" rationale for same print: Anything published before 1923 [wherever] "goes". Best, [w.] 09:35, 6 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to "rant" once more: The nose of the portrayed person is not really Herkomer's, the eyebrows are not; the engraved signature looks very-V.E.R.Y much like HH'97.
After 1890, HH did not wear a beard. So, HOW please do you support your statement it is a self-portrait???? imo, it is just one of hundreds "heads of people" H. did. [w.] 18:23, 13 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
