Suggestions[edit]

Great map! -- A couple of suggestions for improvements:

  • The Duchy of Savoy should be shown as a part of the Empire. While the other Italian states had de facto nothing to do with the Empire at this time, Savoy participated in the Reichstag until the French Revolution, and always considered itself a part of the Empire.
  • The cities of the Décapole (Landau, Weissenburg etc.) were given to France in the Peace of Westphalia, so this should be shown.
  • The territory labeled Brunswick-Lüneburg should be labeled either Brunswick-Celle or just Lüneburg. "Brunswick-Lüneburg" is the name of the Duchy as a whole, including all subdivisions.

I dont think any of the maps of the HRE 1648 Ive seen include Savoy. Schlettstadt and Turkheim (two of the Décapole cities) are shown in the empire in [1] . That map labels the other territory you mentioned as the Duchy of Lüneburg, but [2] has it as Brunswick Lüneburg --Astrokey44 02:02, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Savoy: According to my reading of the Shepherd map, Savoy is included in the Empire. The map uses a thick dashed line to denote the borders of the Empire, and Savoy is surrounded by such a line. Compare to the border between Piedmont and Switzerland: a thin dashed line, since neither of them belongs to the Empire. Décapole: Here is a map showing them belonging to France, admittedly in 1660. Might be a question for experts. Chl 02:51, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Meanings?[edit]

What to B., C., D., E. etc. stand for? I assume D. is Duchy, and C. might be County, but I'm at a loss for the others. Cassowary (talk) 00:37, 20 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A: Archbishopric [Erzbistum], B: Bishopric [Bistum], C: County [Grafschaft], D: Duchy [Herzogtum], E: Electorate [Kurfürstentum], L: Landgraviate [Landgrafschaft] M: Margraviate [Markgrafschaft], P: Principality [Fürstentum]. The square brackets are the equivalent German terms. Valentinian T / C 19:14, 24 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I'm adding these over. Cassowary (talk) 11:22, 25 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The Netherlands[edit]

The representation of the Spanish Netherlands is faulty. Considering them as one entity is one option because of the Pragmatic Sanction of 1549, but the two borders which are shown are inside them are not correct. Firstly the county of Artois is shown separately for no apparent reason, and secondly the border shown NW of Artois is the border between the Spanish Netherlands and France that was fixed at the Treaty of Nijmegen in 1678; it not correspond with any interoir borders of the Netherlands before that date. If the interior borders are to be shown (which would make sense, because the Pragmatic Sanction never formally installed a unified Habsburg Netherlands), this map should be used.
