the Deposition was painted about a year after the only signed painting by Hugo Van Der Goes, which is in my possession. If the "Right Wing of Deposition" had a left wing it might include my painting. My painting was carried by Columbus to America during his second voyage and was mentioned by Washing Irving in his books about Columbus' voyages, and is described in detail by other authors who were contemporaries of Columbus. Columbus was in Louven the same year as Hugo Van Der Goes, and may have acquired it then. My painting is on canvas, as is the Deposition. These are the only known paintings by Hugo on canvas. They are both oil paintings. They are both of profound religious nature. My painting was handed down from relatives who were in Cuba during and after the civil war, and may have acquired it then. They were avid art collectors in the nineteenth century, which was when my painting was acquired. Hugo was a master of the "glance" or the "stare," which is the main course theme of my painting. The style is right. The mood is right. The colors are right for one of his paintings.
