Hominids vs. Humans[edit]

Kelvinsong,

Such a great graphic for gaining the larger perspective on our planet's biologic history.

I note your Aug 2012 change replacing "human" with "hominid"; however, over the last decade or so the term "hominid" has been replaced by "hominan" in the sense of describing humans (that is H. sapiens and all extinct species of genus Homo). Thus a "hominan" is a member of the subtribe "Hominina," and, along with the subtribe(s) "Australopithecina" (and, although not yet fully resolved, "Panina") make up the tribe "Hominini." The superior clade of subfamily "Homininae" comprises all African great apes (adding "Gorilini" [and "Panini" if not already included at the tribe level]; Orangutans join at the level of family "Hominidae." Thus, a "hominid," that is a member of "Hominidae," now describes all great apes.

I appreciate your reasoning for the change and suggest a couple of alternatives: one, change "Hominid" to "Hominan," which will invariably cause some question marks; or two, leave the term "Hominid" but move the mark to 18 Ma depicting the great ape divergence within order Primates. I don't know how fine a change you can get away with and not need a disclaimer, but a third possibility would be to use the term "Humankind."

Yours for rumination,

Please verify and change this error in this file and its original[edit]

@Kelvin13, Mikenorton, Woudloper, and Hardwigg:

To the above editors and anyone else who is interested, there is a problem with the second mention of Snowball Earth in this file and its original. Instead of:

Two Snowball Earths

it should be:

Second Snowball Earth

or, if there were two Snowball Earths at that particular point in time, it should be:

Second and third Snowball Earths

Since my real-life limitations likely won't let me follow up on this problem, I give you my thanks in advance. Sincerely, Geekdiva (talk) 23:18, 5 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
