Dress[edit]

Schurz is not wearing a military uniform in this photograph. There are no insignias, rank indications, etc. I have revised the categories accordingly. It is true in the Reminiscences (v. 3) the caption reads "Major-General Carl Schurz". Bob Burkhardt (talk) 21:20, 13 November 2021 (UTC) It is remarkable that John Murray's edition of v. 2 used this illustration to illustrate Schurz as a brigadier general in place of File:Brigadier General Schurz.png used by McClure's edition (plate opposite p. 348), and almost as remarkable that it was used by McClure's in preference to File:Major General Schurz.png for v. 3 as an illustration of Schurz as a major general (plate opposite of p. 50) when the McClure's magazine articles were collected into a book. The outfit here seems to be in the same vein as the outfit of the Academic Legion which Schurz describes on p. 145 of v. 1. I'm doubtful that the U.S. Army had anything to do with it.
