Purpose[edit]

The purpose for which this image was taken is to illustrate the contrast between mature geisha and apprentice maiko, in their clothing, makeup, and hair.

Note that these are authentic geisha from the Kamishichiken district at work, serving tea during a festival, not tourists dressed as geisha.

I'm fairly certain this is not a "mature" geiko but a jikata (musician) geiko, who per tradition do not wear the taka shimada wig nor the make-up. --Pitke (talk) 16:51, 13 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
