When it comes to the flag of the Taliban:[edit]

Both variants, the recently introduced and refined Shahada and the old Shahada are being used simultaneously by the Taliban, via video evidence both from private and public Afghani Television Channels and public photos. Currently, the old Shahada on white is used more often than the refined one. Until an official statement comes from the Taliban themselves about the change to the Shahada, I propose we revert the flag back to the old Shahada. The flag is not really standardized. It's just a shahada on a white background. Most flags they use however, such as on their website, are more similar to the one now used for this file Serafart (talk) 04:32, 22 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong Information[edit]

The white flag only represent the Taliban political and militant group not Afghanistan or Afghans. As in every country every political party has flag and the same goes for Afghanistan. Afghanistan national flag is black, red and green with modified coat of arms includes the Arabic inscriptions “Afghanistan” and “There is no deity but God; Muhammad is the messenger of God.” The coat of arms still includes a mosque, two flags, and sheaves of wheat. 2001:569:7C98:6B00:CC40:9A6F:1ADD:4CC3 07:03, 4 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

"Official" version of the Shahada on the flag[edit]

Per the recent edit history of the flag and the sources listed therein, and via a search, it appears there is not universal agreement on the version of the Shahada present on the flag. Also, I am unsure if there is any standardized version at all (or if there is, where it would be found), which then brings up the question: which version should we display on the flag? @HapHaxion and Jeff G.: There is not universal agreement because the Taliban themselves use many different designs. Their flag law only specifies that there is a Shahada, it is black, and the flag ratio is 1:2. I believe the most commonly used official version now is the one used at the giant flag raising in Kabul last month (which is also seen at diplomatic meetings hosted at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs), which is a mix of both this file and File:Flag of Taliban (variant).svg. I have made a request at Wikipedia's Illustration Workshop with a plethora of sources from the flag-raising ceremony. If either of you can vectorize that version and overwrite this file with it, that would be great! I lack the necessary technical skill, and uploaded the current version because it was the closest. The current version is just the Saudi Shahada, which is observed but less commonly. It can be reuploaded as a second variant. ― Tartan357 ^Talk 03:36, 28 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Calligraphical: The current design is not "new", but I chose it because it's closer to the one displayed at the aforementioned flag-raising ceremony. I'm still waiting on someone to vectorize that version. Meanwhile, you will see the current version is the one displayed on the Taliban's official website, as well as the sources provided in the file description. @Calligraphical and HapHaxion: I disagree with this choice and think it should be changed back to the one I uploaded in August (with whatever small tweaks came after). It was also used in a flag-raising ceremony at the time (the first, I believe), and is used many times on the Afghanistan website—not in the banner at the top, but everywhere else—(https://alemarahenglish.af/). It is further used in this tweet dated yesterday from the "Spokesman for the Political Office of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan" of an image stamped with the seal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs: https://twitter.com/IeaOffice/status/1535214229678071808, which is also linked to on the IEA website. Not particularly. Though Lexicon seems to have misunderstood some key points here. One, nobody is saying that any of these versions being discussed are not official. They all are, and the approach of trying to find a single "correct" version online simply isn't going to work. What you see on the websites largely depends on whoever happens to be posting that content, since any Shahada design is allowed under the law. Two, when I talk about the flag-raising ceremony, I'm talking about a flag we don't have a vector for yet. That is the massive flag-raising ceremony at the park in central Kabul with the hundreds of flags and all the fanfare and public participation ([1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7]). When that design is available, it is what we should use. The event Lexicon is referring to as a "flag-raising ceremony" is not really that—it was a press conference immediately after they took control of the country. The event I'm referring to is the only one that has been referred to by the press as a "flag-raising ceremony". I was honestly expecting us to have the large Kabul flag vectorized by now. That graphics lab request has been sitting for over a month with no action; if anybody here possesses the skill to create that one then that would resolve this issue. In the meantime, I do not feel too strongly about which of these other two versions are used, but that should not be taken to mean that one is more correct than the other. I only made the change because I thought it was a better placeholder because of its similarity to the giant flag design, but I'd much rather we work on the version the Deputy PM formally introduced at a ceremony as "the flag of the whole nation" than argue over the ideal placeholder version. ― Tartan357 ^Talk 02:31, 12 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I can work on this new version in the coming days. That said, I'm still not entirely convinced that it's any more "correct" than the other version. Does one mass flag raising trump the use of the other version in many other official contexts? Maybe. But also maybe not. Might have just been the design the printer in that case had on hand. Thank you. To be clear, I'm not arguing that that one is more correct either, but I think it's the most appropriate choice for the main design. It is also the one they put out for formal diplomatic meetings hosted in Kabul [8] as well as the version they hoisted over the presidential palace [9] and at the Kabul airport [10]. There are some other examples, as well, that I can provide if you want. It also seems to be in between the two versions we already have in terms of design elements, so considering the totality of these factors, I think it is the best choice for the main design. If you look at pictures of flags in news reports, there's so much variation, and this one falls pretty much in the middle in terms of the size of the Shahada relative to the background, and the intensity of the strokes used.
